Hindi Grammar

  • There are two Genders in Hindi, Masculine and Feminine. Gender is either based on the gender the object is or on usage. One General rule, all words ending with A are masculine and those ending with I are feminine. But there are many exceptions to this rule.

    Masculine nouns ending with A
    rupiya- rupee
    kela-banaana
    santara-orange
    kamara-room
    ladka-boy
    beta-son

    Masculine Nouns Ending with a constant:
    ghar-house
    makan-house
    mandir-temple
    chaval-rice
    phul-flower


    Exceptions:
    hathi-elephant
    pani-water
    ghee-clairfied butter
    adami-man

    Femnine Nouns Ending with Vowel Sound
    ladki-girl
    beti-daughter
    chini-sugar
    patni-wife
    Feminine Nouns Ending in a Consonant
    aurat-woman
    kalam-pen
    kitab-book
    mez-table

    Some Practice Sentaces:
    yah ladka hai-This is a boy.
    yah ladki Hai-This is a girl.
    yah ladki sundar hai- this girl is pretty.
    yah ladka chota hai- this boy is small.
    yah ladki choti hai-this girl is small.

  • Hai changes to Hain to the Plural.

Examples:

Yah ghar bara hai. -This house is big

Ye ghar bare hain.- These houses are big.

Yah roti garam hai.-This bread is hot.

Ye rotiyan garam hain.-These breads are hot.
